ZAKAH
“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and increase them…” — Qur’an 9:103
→ What Is Zakāh?
Zakāh is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — a sacred act of worship that cleanses the heart from greed, purifies wealth, and uplifts struggling families, students, and communities.
Zakāh is not just a donation.
It is a right of the poor, and a duty upon the wealthy.
→ Upon Whom Is Zakāh Fard (Obligatory)?
Zakāh becomes obligatory on a Muslim who meets the following conditions:
-
Muslim
-
Adult and of sound mind
-
Possesses the Nisāb (minimum amount of wealth)
-
Wealth has remained in ownership for one full lunar year
-
Wealth is productive or growing (cash, savings, business, gold, etc.)
If these conditions are fulfilled, Zakāh is fard.
→ When Does Zakāh Become Fard?
Zakāh becomes obligatory when:
-
A person’s wealth reaches the Nisāb threshold
-
A full lunar year passes while still above the Nisāb
-
At the end of that year, Zakāh must be paid immediately and without delay.
→ Who Can Receive Zakāh? (According to Qur’an 9:60)
Zakāh can only be given to the categories Allah Himself has mentioned:
-
The Poor (Fuqarā’)
-
The Needy (Masākīn)
-
Those in debt
-
New Muslims / Reverts who need support
-
Students or individuals in the path of Allah
-
Travelers in difficulty
-
Those whose hearts need strengthening
-
Zakāh administrators
-
Zakāh cannot be used for buildings or construction — it must go directly to eligible people.
